Penticton by-election anticipated in late summer

It’s déjà vu in Penticton as another by-election is set to be called to replace a departing city council member.

Helena Konanz has submitted her resignation after securing a win in the April 28 federal election for Similkameen-South Okanagan–West Kootenay.

Helena has been a dedicated member of Council and a strong advocate for our community during her ten years of service,” Mayor Julius Bloomfield said. “We look forward to working with Helena in her new role as MP and wish her every success as she continues to advocate for the region.”

A chief election officer will be appointed in the coming weeks to start the process of filling the seat, no later than 80 days after the appointment.

That puts the anticipated election in late summer.

Pentictonites just went to the polls in early April to replace Amelia Boutlbee, who earned a win in the fall provincial election with the B.C. Conservative Party.

The winner there, Jason Reynen, was sworn in on April 16.

Coun. James Miller, who faces historical sexual assault charges, remains on mandatory leave. His trial is expected to start in December.

Council continues to have quorum and can fulfill all its mandated duties.
