City of Penticton announces plans for upcoming by-election

The Resignation of Councillor Helena Konanz has been received, effective immediately, following her successful election as Member of Parliament for Similkameen-South Okanagan–West Kootenay. The City extends congratulations to Helena on her federal election win and wishes her the best as she transitions to her new role in Ottawa.

Mayor Julius Bloomfield expressed his gratitude for Helena’s decade-long service to the community: “Helena has been a dedicated member of Council and a strong advocate for our community during her ten years of service. We are proud to see a member of our Council take on this important new role at the federal level. We look forward to working with Helena in her new role as MP and wish her every success as she continues to advocate for the region.”

In accordance with the Local Government Act, the City of Penticton is required to hold a by-election to fill the vacant council seat. A Chief Election Officer will be appointed in the coming weeks, and the General Voting Day will be set for a Saturday no later than 80 days after the appointment. The By-Election is anticipated to take place in late Summer. The costs associated will be funded through the City’s General Surplus.

“We are beginning the preparatory work to hold a by-election,” says Angie Collison, corporate officer. “This includes setting the General Voting Day, advance polls, and mail ballot options. Our team is committed to ensuring a smooth and efficient election process for the residents of Penticton.”

With Councillor James Miller on a mandatory Leave of Absence, Council continues to have quorum and can fulfill all its mandated duties. Penticton’s newest Councillor, Jason Reynen, was sworn in on April 16, 2025.
