Kelowna Art Gallery to unveil towering new installation

Art enthusiasts in the Okanagan will soon have the chance to experience HANDMADE, a monumental new installation by Quebec City-based Argentine sculptor José Luis Torres.

Opening on May 10, the exhibit will be displayed in the open-air Courtyard at the Kelowna Art Gallery.

Torres, known for his innovative use of everyday materials, reimagines doors, windows, and wooden pallets in HANDMADE to create a towering structure on stilts.

The work, described as maze-like and complex, not only challenges conventional exhibition formats but also explores themes of survival and the value of ordinary objects.

The artist’s hands-on, evolving approach to his projects has gained national recognition, with his work featured in institutions like the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec and Museum London.

Based in Quebec City since 2003, Torres holds degrees in visual arts, sculpture, and architecture.

Ahead of the exhibition’s opening, an official reception is slated for May 9, 2025, from 6 to 8 pm, where Torres will be in attendance. The installation will remain on display until May 2026.
