RDCO seeks input on the draft Regional Agricultural Strategy

The Regional District of Central Okanagan is inviting residents across the region to complete a survey to share their thoughts on the draft Regional Agricultural Strategy.

Agriculture is an important part of the Central Okanagan’s economy, heritage and quality of life. However, several challenges are facing agriculture in the region, such as pressures from population growth, a changing climate, and an evolving economy. In response, the RDCO is updating the Regional Agricultural Strategy, which was originally developed in 2005.

“The draft Regional Agricultural Strategy includes recommendations for how we can all work together to promote the success of agriculture in the region,” said Mariah VanZerr, RDCO Regional Planning Manager. “Now we need to hear from residents to see if we got it right.”

Until June 27, 2025, residents are invited to complete a short online survey at yoursay.rdco.com.  The draft Regional Agricultural Strategy includes over 60 actions designed to help agriculture feed our community, our economy and our future.

The actions are organized around seven goals:

  1. Increase water security for the agri-food industry
  2. Preserve and protect the agricultural land base
  3. Prepare for emergencies with agriculture in mind
  4. Address regional soil removal and deposit challenges
  5. Attract farm labour and create certainty for temporary farm worker housing
  6. Provide education and communication around Central Okanagan agriculture and food systems
  7. Support economic development initiatives for agriculture

Public feedback will be used to refine the vision, goals, and actions in the draft strategy before it is finalized and brought to the Regional Board for endorsement later this fall.

Residents are asked to visit yoursay.rdco.com to find out more about the draft Regional Agricultural Strategy and complete the survey for a chance to win one of two $100 grocery store gift cards.
