City of Penticton highlights inclusivity during AccessAbility Week

The City of Penticton continues to work to make the community an inclusive place for all and is proud to highlight some key features and ongoing efforts during National AccessAbility Week (May 25-31).

To kick off the week, Recreation Penticton welcomes the community to participate in tours of the Community Centre to learn about adaptive and inclusive programming options and equipment on the following dates:

• Tuesday, May 27 at 9 a.m. or 2 p.m.
• Thursday, May 27 at 9 a.m. or 2 p.m.

Inclusive recreation programs offered free to try include:
• Friends in Motion: Tuesday, May 27 from 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
• Minds in Motion: Tuesday, May 27 from 1:30 pm – 3:00 p.m.

While visiting the Community Centre this week, complete a feedback form to share your ideas for new programs or specialized equipment that could help remove barriers to participation. A booth will also be set up with information about local accessible and adaptive programs, supports and other resources.

Other recent accessibility milestones for the City include:

• Adding two additional mobi-mat and mobi-chair locations, now at Okanagan Lake beach (west end) and Skaha Lake beach (near the tennis courts) and the original location at Sudbury Beach.
• Free parking in city lots and on-street parking for vehicles with current, visible accessible parking placards (must still adhere to posted parking times)
• New emergency alert program Voyent Alert! offers accessibility features for users with disabilities, including the ability to receive alerts in various formats through assistive technology

The City regularly collects feedback on barriers related to City services and facilities, as well as its Accessibility Plan. To learn more or complete a feedback form, please visit penticton.ca/accessible-city
