With fire risk continuing to rise due to sustained hot and dry weather, the Regional District of Central Okanagan (RDCO) is reminding all park visitors to use caution and remain aware of fire prevention and safety requirements while enjoying regional parks this summer.
Smoking, vaping and open flames are not permitted at any time in RDCO regional or community parks. Propane-fueled barbecues are allowed but must be attended at all times and kept safely away from any flammable materials.
“With the hot and dry conditions we’re experiencing, the risk of wildfire is very real,” says Matt Hammond, Manager of Parks Operations. “We’re asking everyone to do their part by following the rules and staying vigilant. A single careless act, like a discarded cigarette, can have devastating consequences for our parks, wildlife and nearby communities. Fire safety and emergency preparedness is everyone’s responsibility.”
Fines for violating Regional Parks or RDCO Community Parks bylaws range from $50 to $2,000. However, the greater concern is the potential for smoking or open flames to spark a wildfire that could seriously threaten park amenities, wildlife habitat and nearby homes.
Anyone who sees a fire in any park is urged to call 9-1-1 immediately to report it.
In addition to permanent signage at park entrances, fire warning sandwich boards are being rotated throughout the regional park system to remind visitors of the elevated fire hazard and the ongoing ban on smoking and open flames.
