A Special Council Meeting was held Thursday June 5, 2025 to discuss the City’s current financial situation and 2026 budget projection, budget survey results, and to review the status of projects as they relate to the 2023 – 2026 strategic plan.

Primary Care and Public Health Update
Interior Health presented to Council on primary care services and public health initiatives in the region.
Update on workforce housing for VJH medical residents and new immigration pilot
Community Futures North Okanagan provided an update to Council on their role in physician recruitment. This includes the development of workforce housing for medical residents at VJH and an application to the Ministry of Health to open a Community Health Clinic in Vernon. They also shared information about the new community-driven North Okanagan–Shuswap Rural Community Immigration Pilot program, which supports workforce development in key sectors of the region.
City receives Government Finance Officers Association Award
The City of Vernon has received the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association for its 2023 Annual Report. It is the 15th consecutive year the City has earned this national honour for excellence in financial transparency and reporting.
Washroom operating hours extended at DND Park
Council passed a motion to extend the operating hours for public washrooms at the Department of National Defense (DND) Park, located at 1451 Mission Road. The park has seen increased use since the installation of a new playground in 2024. The hours will be dawn to dusk, seven days a week, from June 16 – October 17, 2025
Hesperia Landfill closure design
Council approved funding of up to $80,000 from the Hesperia Landfill Reserve to complete the detailed design of Phase 1 of the landfill’s closure. This work is a required step under the site’s Operational Certificate and supports the City’s long-term closure and reclamation plan.
Council presented the 2024 Annual Report
Council was presented the 2024 Annual Report, which outlines financial results and progress toward the City’s objectives over the past year. In accordance with the Community Charter, Council will hold a public input session on June 23, 2025, to receive comments.
Council Discretionary Grants – April 2025 intake
Council approved $47,911.12 in discretionary grants to 11 local non-profit organizations, supporting a range of community initiatives including youth programs, safety equipment, food security, arts, recreation, and accessibility. The grants were recommended by the Finance Committee following the April 2025 intake. There will be another intake period in the fall.
