Ten dead, dozens injured after school shooting in Tumbler Ridge

Ten people are dead and at least 25 are injured after a school shooting in Tumblr Ridge.

The community, which sits about an hours drive from Dawson Creek, is a town of about 2,400 people.

Mounties were called to the Tumblr Ridge Secondary School for reports of an active shooter just after 1 PM on Tuesday. Officers said they and found six people dead, plus the shooter inside shortly after.

RCMP said the suspect died from what appeared to be a self inflicted gunshot wound, and is described as a female in a dress with brown hair.
BC RCMP Superintendent Ken Young says they are still trying to sort out the motive.
“We are not in a place now to be able to understand why and what may have motivated this tragedy,” he said in a late night press conference.
No word on the ages of the suspects, unknown if they are students or staff.
Mounties also said they found two more people dead in a nearby property, believed to be connected to the shooting.
BC Solicitor General Nina Krieger said support will be available in Tumbler Ridge going forward.

The RCMP said additional resources are being deployed to the community to support the response and investigation.

The BC RCMP’s Major Crime unit has taken over the investigation.

The event is the worst school shooting since Ecole Polytechnique in 1989, where 14 women were murdered.
