KELOWNA, B.C. — Kelowna International Airport (YLW) has officially opened its new Operations and Emergency Services Building. The $22.1‑million facility is designed to improve safety, efficiency and emergency response.
The purpose‑built building consolidates airport operations and emergency services staff and equipment under one roof, replacing previously dispersed facilities and allowing for faster coordination during emergencies.
The two‑storey facility is located north of the airport terminal and features drive‑through bays capable of housing up to six emergency response vehicles. Office space, training areas and staff amenities are located on the second floor to support 24‑hour operations.
Federal funding covered $7.1 million of the project through Transport Canada’s Airport Critical Infrastructure Program.
Federal and local officials said the building is a key investment in the airport’s long‑term growth and safety record.
“Strong and reliable airports are essential to safe and efficient air travel across Canada,” Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon said in a statement.

Airport officials say the building is designed to meet operational needs beyond 2045, with capacity to scale alongside anticipated passenger and air service growth.
YLW is ranked as the ninth busiest in Canada, offering direct service to 22 destinations with eight airlines.
Members of the public will have an opportunity to tour the new building during YLW’s Spring Travel Show on Saturday. The facility will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with airport firefighters and operations staff on site to showcase equipment and explain emergency response operations.
