By a vote of 5-3 Kelowna City Council Monday afternoon gave the green light to a proposed land swap and rezoning package that will see the city assume control of the golf course and surrounding wetlands in exchange for a 9.1 acre parcel of industrial land given to Denciti Development Corporation.
Councillors Stack, Singh, Webber, Wooldridge along with Mayor Tom Dyas voted in favour of the re-zoning with Councillors Hodge, Lovegrove and Cannan voting against the proposal. Maxine DeHart abstained citing a conflict of interest.
In speaking to the issue prior to the vote Ron Cannan stated its a bad deal for the city saying ” I’m really concerned in how the city is giving the developer 9.1 acres of prime industrial land , a very high value public asset owned by the taxpayers of Kelowna that is double the value of the nine hole wetland property zoned private recreational”.
In speaking in favour of the deal Mayor Tom Dyas said he was aware there was opposition to the proposal but ” Our city needs to make difficult and informed decisions that allow our community to grown and move forward.”
The rezoning will be finalized once final reading is given which will then officially trigger the proposed land swap .
