First major wildfire of season burning near Merritt considered under control by BCWS

A wildfire east of Merritt near Quilchena Creek is now considered under control by the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS). The total size of the burn area is mapped at 880 hectares in size.

On the morning of April 9 BCWS said the fire was held at a size of 150 hectares, by the afternoon the fire status returned to out of control.

On April 10, BCWS reported the fire was once again held at a size of 550 hectares. BCWS says the additional growth is not due to increased or aggressive fire behaviour, suppression efforts or challenges to suppression efforts, but due to traditional cultural burning practices being conducted adjacent to the incident.

The fire is believed to be human caused.
