West Kelowna RCMP say its crime reduction unit made 30 arrests for shoplifting over a two-day period in August.
Mounties say the operation brought together members of several police units and loss prevention personnel from local businesses to prevent theft and criminal activity. During the operation, more than 30 people were arrested, numerous criminal charges were made, referrals were made to alternative measures, including restorative justice, store bans were issued to shoplifters and thousands of dollars of merchandise was recovered.
RCMP say they also arrested an impaired driver, charged two prohibited drivers and seized more than 150 grams of illicit drugs.
“This initiative was a testament to what can be achieved when communities work together,” said project lead with the West Kelowna RCMP Crime Reduction Unit, Cst. Matt MacKay.
“Retail theft affects more than just the businesses being targeted, it impacts employees, customers and the wider community. The success of this project demonstrates what can be accomplished when police, loss prevention officers and local businesses work together. We remain committed to targeting repeat offenders and holding those responsible for retail crime accountable.”
RCMP added that the project would not have been possible without the support from community partners.
