Prescribed burns planned in Kelowna at end of September

The city of Kelowna says prescribed burns are planned in Gallagher’s Canyon, Knox Mountain Park and Quail Ridge beginning as early as September 28. During the burns, the City says residents may notice smoke and there can potentially be temporary park and trail closures while crews carry out the wildfire risk reduction work.

“Reducing wildfire risk before fire season starts is one of the most effective ways we can help protect our community,” says Dennis Craig, Assistant Fire Chief, Mitigation & Prevention. “These carefully planned fires remove excess vegetation in a controlled environment, helping protect nearby homes, trails and natural areas while supporting healthier ecosystems.”
