New school needs new name in Central Kelowna

Central Okanagan Public Schools is inviting the community to suggest a name for a new middle school.

The District is gearing up for the construction of an 800-student capacity middle school located at the Burtch Road site near the Apple Bowl and Parkinson Recreation Centre.

The School District says the naming process is not a vote or a contest. Instead, the District invites students, staff, families, Indigenous partners, and community members to suggest meaningful names and explain their significance.

“This new school in the heart of Kelowna deserves a name that will deepen its natural connection to the land and the community where it’s located,” said Jon Rever, Superintendent of Schools. “We hope people will take time to offer thoughtful ideas and share the significance behind them.”

The survey runs until midnight on October 30, 2026.

Those who would like to share their thoughts should visit the Central Okanagan Public Schools website.

Once all ideas have been reviewed by the Planning and Facilities Committee, recommendations will be reviewed by the Board of Education, with a final decision in December 2026. The new middle school is in the early phases of construction and is expected to welcome students in
