Aircraft landings and takeoffs at Kelowna International Airport (YLW) are Lit.
YLW says a new airfield lighting system was officially introduced as a way to increase safety of arriving aircraft. The airport says the new addition is an industry leading LED lighting system to modernization aging infrastructure.
New lights have been added on the runway, taxiway, approach, signage and all control systems.
“The transition to LED airfield lighting delivers two important benefits for YLW: enhanced safety and improved energy efficiency,” says Sam Samaddar, CEO of Kelowna International Airport. “The brighter, more precise lighting makes the runway and airfield environment more visible to pilots, particularly during wildfire smoke events and low-visibility conditions. It is an investment that supports both our sustainability goals and our commitment to maintaining the highest standards of airfield safety.”
YLW says anyone around the airport might notice a new array of five flashing lights at each end of the runway. They say the lights are a normal part of the upgraded system and are not a sign of an emergency or hazard. Instead, they help pilots identify the runway more easily and safely.
The infrastructure upgrade is part of an investment of over $9 million paid through airport revenues and reserves with no taxation impact to residents.
