The downfall of Sears has been named the 2017 Canadian Business News Story of the Year. It received 47 per cent of the votes from journalists across the country, selected by The Canadian Press.
The struggling chain filed for creditor protection in June, sold off some locations and decided to liquidate the rest of its roughly 190 stores, leaving close to 15,000 out of work.
It's just the latest in a string of department store closures in recent memory. Target and Zellers have also left empty holes in malls, shopping centres and stand-alones across Canada.
Small-business tax changes finished second(16%) in the poll. Trade talks and marijuana(14%) finished tied for third.
