Three-year-old Ben Weller's only wish is to stand on his own two feet.
In December 2015, he and his twin brother Alex were born 11 weeks prematurely. Six months later, the boy from West Kelowna was diagnosed with a form of cerebral palsy that prevents him from walking without assistance.
"He sustained a brain injury from being born so early." said his mother, Stephanie Weller. "Right now he uses a walker to kind of motor around and he wears braces to ... kep his feet flat."
Now he has been approved for a rare surgery that could change his life.
"They actually go into the patient's spinal chord and they use electricity to pinpont the nerves that are connected to the damaged part of his brain." said Weller. "By cuttiing these nerves it permanently eliminates the spasticity."
However, the dream comes at a cost. $100,000 to be precise.
The operation is only offered by an american doctor, meaning the Wellers will have to cover the cost of the surgery without the help of insurance.
The family has setup a GoFundMe campaign in an effort to raise the neccessary funds with help from the community.
"For him to be able to run with his brother, to even hold a toy and walk...it would be an absolute dream."
