Central Okanagan Public Schools has a viable site for a new school in West Kelowna. On November 15, the Agricultural Land Commission granted the District's request to build a secondary school on fourteen acres on Webber Road. The District will now develop a Project Definition Report to provide the Provincial Government a feasibility and cost analysis to consider when approving major capital projects.
If the Province gives approval to proceed with design and construction, the school will be completed within three to four years. A new secondary school in West Kelowna will provide welcome relief to Mount Boucherie Secondary School, which already exceeds its capacity by ten percent and is projected to grow by five percent each year.
In March 2019, The Ministry of Education supported Central Okanagan Public Schools to search for a suitable site to accommodate its number one capital priority: building a second secondary school in West Kelowna. The search was a challenge because there are few large sites in West Kelowna that are not in the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR).
The District will inform the community on new developments in the procedure.
