Kelowna International Airport is getting a new runway lightning system.
It's purpose is to safely help pilots land the aircraft.
YLW Manager Sam Samaddar says 50 approach lights will help illuminate an area of the runway where aircraft land from the south:
"We're adding to the safety of the operation of incoming and outbound aircraft, and all these measures are additional safety requirements that will actually help the pilots as they're doing their approach or ascent," he said.
He says during poor weather, the existing lights could be mistaken as regular street lights:
"We are susceptible at certain times of the year to low visibility with fog. So any kind of approach aid that we can use to help the pilot get visual acuity to the ground and the runway all helps in the landing sequence."
The new lighting being installed this summer, will be located on 9 hectares of city owned farmland south of the airport.
Samaddar says close to 100 planes land and take-off each day from the airport.
Lightning to the north side of the runaway for in-bound aircraft was improved several years ago.
