The colder than normal winter this year continues, with another wave of arctic air.
Environment Canada Meteorologist, Alyssa Charbonneau, says a ridge of high pressure is bringing the sunny, dry, but cold conditions.
She says things will gradually warm up over the coming days.
“Tonight into tomorrow morning we’re looking at a low of around -19 again so fairly cold,” she says “things will moderate slightly over the next couple of nights after that but still pretty cold overnight and any wind at all could give you wind chill values which would make it feel quite a bit colder than what’s actually in the air”.
Charbonneau says last year we had an unseasonably warm winter, making this winter feel that much colder.
The freezing temperatures even caused "steam fog" to form over Okanagan Lake this morning.
“When you have very cold air that’s sitting over warmer water, because obviously Okanagan Lake not frozen is much warmer than the air temperature above it,” Charbonneau says “Evaporation from that warmer, moist water into the dry, cold air condenses and forms fog".
She says it’s called steam fog because it looks like steam coming out of the water.
By Saturday we will see a return to near normal temperatues, with a forecast high of plus 2 degrees expected for Tuesday.
