A Kelowna man who shot himself in the face while he tried to rob a home last year has been sentenced to 5 ½ years in prison.
Walter Spence, 49, and two other people forced themselves into the Glenmore Rd home in February 2016 yelling “Where's the money?".
During an altercation with the homeowner, Spence shot himself, resulting in the loss of his right eye and cognitive problems from the bullet that remains lodged in his brain.
He was arrested in hospital and has remained in custody since.
Spence pled guilty to robbery with a prohibited firearm and possession of a prohibited firearm and was sentenced on Tuesday.
The 5 ½ year sentenced was recommended by the crown and defence in a joint submission.
With credit for time served, Spence will spend just over 3 more years in prison.
His accomplices in the robbery, an underage boy and a woman, have already been sentenced.
