On September 13, at approximately 1:00 a.m., RCMP received a complaint of a male jumping in a front of a vehicle along Westside Road near Bear Creek Provincial Park and tried to hit the vehicle with an object.
West Kelowna RCMP members responded and located a male in the park they believed to be connected with the complaint carrying garden shears.
While attempting to arrest the individual, an interaction occurred and the male was shot by police; however he fled and entered Okanagan Lake.
He ended up on a log boom in the lake and police began to negotiate with the man.
Additional members were called in to assist from the Kelowna RCMP.
With the assistance of police officers both on the water in a RCMP boat and on the shore, he was eventually taken into custody at approximately 7:21 a.m. without further incident.
He received immediate medical assistance and his injuries are believed to be non-life threatening.
The scene has been secured, and the Independent Investigation Office of BC (IIO BC) has been notified and have deployed to the scene.
IIO BC will assume conduct of the investigation into the police-involved shooting.
West Kelowna RCMP will continue to investigate the initial complaint and are looking to speak with any witnesses who have not already spoken to police.
Anyone who has any information is asked to contact the West Kelowna RCMP at 250-768-2880.
