The BC pumpkin crop took a hit this year because of the weather - fewer were harvested across BC and the pumpkins are smaller.
Jaz Sanghera, at Don-O-Ray Farms in Kelowna, says they harvested 50% fewer pumpkins this season - and the problems started from day one in the spring.
"It was very cold with lots of rain, so a lot of the plants didn't germinate - and then we had the hot weather and we didn't have enough water supply," he says.
Without rain, many farmers had to irrigate more than usual, and that caused issues with weeds which increased labour costs in getting rid of them.
Some farms are reporting their costs increased 25%, but Sanghera says Don-O-Ray will endeavour to keep prices on par with last year's.
"They'll be the same price as last year. Right now, we're about 39 cents a pound, but it'll probably be a little cheaper closer to Thanksgiving and Halloween," he says.
Sanghera says you'll likely see the biggest price increases at the larger chains.
Don-O-Ray Farms is located on Benvoulin Road south of KLO.
