Even the BC RCMP have been hit by an email speeding ticket scam.
RCMP Corporal Janelle Shoihet says police have been seeing the scam throughout the province, and across Canada, but in a twist - the RCMP themselves have been targeted.
Shoihet says the scam email landed in the police department's public inbox.
"It's not even personalized to us - it reads: "Hello Dear, BC RCMP"
She says the email goes on to state you've been detected speeding, and then asks for personal information to pay your fine.
"So they would use that information to get credit cards; lines of credit in your name with your information, or get accounts with Telus or Hydro, or in some cases, try to get information about your mortgage, so the information that you're providing would be used for fraudulent means," she says.
Shoihet says the RCMP do not send emails in relation to violation tickets, and in fact they don’t send unsolicited emails at all.
If you receive such an email, do not click any links, nor think about paying a fine, report it to the Canadian Anti- Fraud Center, then delete it.
The RCMP have a safety tips page for more information on Frauds and Scams.
