Kelowna City Council voted unanimously in favor of beginning immediate repairs to Bellevue Creek.
During the 2018 flood season, a large amount of material was carried downstream, causing the creek's capacity to be reduced. Council heard at Monday's meeting that repairs would have to begin right away so that they could be complete by next spring.
To cover the repairs, the City's financial plan will be adjusted to include $600,000. $400,000 of this will come from the province's Disaster Financial Assistance Program, while the remaining costs will come from the City's Flood Control Averaging Reserve.
While not as devastating as the 2017 flooding, this spring's flood season is estimated to have cost the City approximately $2 million in damages.
