Kelowna Mounties have issued a warning about the 'grandparent scam'.
On Tuesday, a couple in their 70's entered the RCMP detachment on Richter Street looking for help in locating their grandson - they even arrived with cash in hand to try and post his bail.
They told police they received a telephone call from their 'grandson' who explained he'd been involved in a bad car accident - suffered a broken nose - and was arrested for impaired driving.
He claimed to be detained at the Court house and asked the couple to electronically transfer $1,000 which he needed for bail.
RCMP smelled a scam and helped the couple contact their real grandson who was okay - and the man and woman did not lose any money.
Police say victims of the grandparent scam typically fail to verify the story until after they've transferred cash - and often the fraudster, who seems frightened, will ask the victim not to tell other relatives.
