The government's new online pot store opened on time Wednesday, processing more than 3300 orders before most of us had finished our breakfast. Manager Communications for the BC Liquour Distribution Branch Viviana Zanocco says the mandate was to help eliminate the illicit market in order to get marijuana out of the hands of minors. As a result, pricing for legal marijuana in BC is aggressive. Prices are the same in the only bricks and mortar store now open. The Kamloops outlet is also run by the Liquour Distribution Branch. A quick comparison of prices across western provinces for the same low end product shows one gram in BC is $6.94, in Alberta it's $9.24, Saskatchewan $13.00 and Manitoba $12.00. Zanocco says they sell 92 products from 40 licensed producers, but only a small percent are BC grown.
