Chris Nelson, opinionist for the Calgary Herald joined AM 1150’s Early Edition to discuss why he believes young people should be cut some coronavirus slack.
Nelson is a baby boomer, and he said many people his age or slightly younger have pension benefit plans and health benefits after many years of working secure jobs.
“These days young people, there’s not a chance in heck that when they retire, if they ever get to retire, they'll have those sort of benefits and that sort of longevity in any career. It's a lot dicier out there than it was for people like ourselves.”
Nelson said young people have a better outlook on life than his generation did at their age, and the country continues to accumulate debts that will be placed on the backs of the younger generations.
Nelson added they deserve some slack because during the flu pandemic in ‘68 and ‘69, he and his friends weren't just sitting at home.
“That generation challenged every scripture that was in place at that time. We didn't shelter in place - what did we do? Half a million of us wandered up from some sex, drugs, and rock and roll at a place called Woodstock.”
Nelson noted that although the second wave of the pandemic killed around four million people, his generation didn’t have any intention of keeping six feet apart.
