The City is moving onto the next phase of marijuana retail shops in Kelowna.
At city hall yesterday, council decided to open the doors to individual applications for cannabis retailers, on a first-come, first-serve basis.
There is no limit yet but a 500 meter buffer is required between marijuana stores.
Suburban and Rural Planning Manager, Dean Strachan said a number of people have expressed interest but staff are not concerned.
"It hasn’t been a significant number of interested parties at this point. It’s going to be something we continue to monitor and update as we go and if we do identify a significant issue we will bring forward a recommendation to council," said Strachan.
According to Mayor Colin Basran, the required 500 metre buffer between marijuana shop locations will prevent a significant amount of stores from opening up.
“Like anyone wanting any land use, residents have the ability and the right to apply to council. Whether or not it's recommended by staff or not is an entirely different thing."
15 were green lit in the initial process last November but none have received provincial approval to open their doors.
The province confirmed it has received Kelowna's applications but has given no indication when they will be approved.
