Student Exchange – Haruhigaoka Junior High

Four students from our Westside middle schools (École Glenrosa Middle and Constable Neil Bruce Middle) traveled to our sister school in Kasugai, Japan from November 3rd to November 12th to take part in a cultural exchange at Haruhigaoka Junior High School. The four students had a fantastic cultural experience. They attended school all week and had a wonderful homestay experience with families of some of the Grade 9 students at our sister school. In February 2024, the two Westside middle schools will host 110 students and 8 staff from Haruhigaoka Junior High School, their first visit to Canada since 2019.

The Board of Education approved the 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 Budget Timeline.
2. École Dr. Knox Middle School – Golf Academy Fee Increase
The Board of Education approved the proposed fee increase of $100 (from $400 to $500/student) for the Golf Academy (École Dr. Knox Middle School).
3. Proposal for Substantive Change – Outdoor Education Academy (École Glenrosa Middle School)
The Board of Education approved the Proposal for Substantive Change – Outdoor Education Academy
(École Glenrosa Middle School).
4. Proposal to Expand The Canadian Index for Adolescent Health Upstream Project Survey as Developed by the Canadian Observatory on Homelessness (CoH) at York University
The Board of Education approved all grade 8 student participation in the Upstream Project as funding for expansion of the program becomes available.
5. Enrollment Application Dates for 2024/2025 School Year
The Board of Education approved the initial enrollment application dates for the 2024/2025 school year be set as January 29, 2024 at 7:00 am through to March 15, 2024. The closing date of enrollment applications, in order to apply the Board's enrollment application priorities as established in Regulations 405R – Student Placement (Regulations), be set as August 29, 2024.
The enrollment application information will be forwarded to the media for publication, and school administration will be publicizing the application dates on their school websites, in newsletters and/or their telephone call-out system.
Information meetings will be held by all Principals of elementary schools that offer French Immersion Programs on Tuesday, January 16th via Zoom. Interested parents/caregivers can attend by joining the Zoom meeting using the following link: sd23.org/french-immersion-session. The information meetings will be recorded and posted to the District website for parents/caregivers who are unable to participate in the Zoom information meetings.
6. Amended Capital Plan Bylaw No. 2023/24 CPSD23-03 (Food Infrastructure Program)

Advocacy
- Following the Provincial Advocacy Day in Victoria on October 19th that brought together Board Chairs with Members of the Legislative Assembly, Board Chairpersons received an Advocacy Day Follow Up Kit from the British Columbia School Trustees Association. Discussion on the Advocacy Day Follow Up Kit will take place at a future General Affairs Committee Meeting.
Items of Special Mention
Trustees and the Superintendent of Schools/CEO spoke of the following.
1. Attendance at various meetings and events throughout the District, including concerts, the Operations Department Annual Staff Holiday Luncheon, the International Education Model UN Positional Paper Student Presentations at the Mary Irwin Theatre, the RSS Queer Straight Alliance event, and carnivals.
2. Congratulations to the AAA Senior Boys and AAAA Senior Girls volleyball teams at École Kelowna Secondary School for winning their respective Provincial Championships. This is the first time in BC School Sports history that one school has won both championships in the same year. The teams will be invited to a future Public Board Meeting for recognition. Also, congratulations to the Mount Boucherie Secondary School Bears and École Okanagan Mission Secondary School Huskies AAAA Girls Volleyball Teams who placed 5th and 6th at the Provincials (after a very exciting 3 set match). At the AA Girls Provincial Tournament, the École George Elliot Secondary School Coyotes finished in 8th place.
3. On Saturday, November 25th the Rutland Senior Boys Football team played in the semi-finals of the BC High School Football Championships. The Voodoos played against the Vancouver College Fighting Irish in one of the semi-finals. The Fighting Irish are the #1 ranked team in BC and Canadian High School Football. Their 4th place is the highest finish for the Voodoos in the final standings.
4. Trustees recently delivered gift baskets to all the schools/sites in the District expressing their appreciation to staff for their contributions to the success of students in Central Okanagan Public Schools.
5. On November 23rd through 25th, Trustees attended the BCSTA Trustee Academy in Vancouver.
6. The Winter edition of Together We Learn with the theme of "Wonder" will be published this week.
