The Central Okanagan's greying population is similar to what's happening in the developed world - this according to a new report titled 'Vital Signs."
The report by the Central Okanagan Foundation found that between 2006 and 2016, the number of people aged 65 and older grew by 35%.
The Foundation's John Grimes says a key point of the report is that while the area is a great place to retire - we need to keep attracting new residents.
"It also has to be working to attract young people, families and young professionals from across Canada and around the world. We'll need that talent in the future to fuel the growing sectors in the economy here, the innovation sector and others, that'll help the community thrive in the future," he says.
Grimes says the Central Okanagan is one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in Canada - and in 50 years from now - three out-of-four residents will have come from elsewhere.
He says to prepare for an influx of new immigrants - we can create a welcoming culture now, and take care of the things that bind us together - the land, air and water.
