Six Central Okanagan students are off to Central America to help build a house with Habitat for Humanity Global Village.
Jane Newall, a grade 12 student at Mount Boucherie Secondary School, says the group is flying to El Salvador for ten days over spring break.
"We're staying in the Chalatenango region which is near the Honduras border," says Newall. "We'll be visiting an elementary school and donating sports equipment, school supplies and as well as used dissecting microscopes. We'll also be spending two nights with a local family and I'm really looking forward to that."
Newall says volunteering is important to her and believes the trip will be rewarding.
"Ever since kindergarten I've dreamed of travelling somewhere and building something, it didn't really matter where; this has really been a life-long goal for me," she says.
Newall says she's excited about immersing herself in a different culture and learning new skills.
"This is my first time doing anything of the sort and we'll be working with some of the local construction workers who are partners with Habitat for Humanity. They'll be teaching us how to mix cement - we're not sure if whether we'll be doing the foundation, the walls or the roof, but we'll find out when we get to the site," she says.
The group, which is scheduled to fly out of Kelowna March 15th, will help build a home for the family they'll be visiting.
