The City of Kelowna is looking to claim a percentage of taxes from ride-sharing companies such as Uber and Lyft, which operate in the City.
A letter was sent to the Provincial Government, listing 11 points of consideration that Council would like to implement for these companies.
Such considerations include the allocation of the proposed taxes, as well as security concerns, such as installing cameras into each of these ride-sharing vehicles.
The taxes would go straight back to the City so that other transportation issues can be worked on.
"Council sees a need for this," says Kelowna Transit and Programs Manager Jerry Dombowski. "They want to see a level playing field, because there's the taxing of the transit industry that's impacted by [ride-sharing companies]."
Mayor Colin Basran says ride-sharing companies are very beneficial for Kelowna, as the City is hoping to reduce car dependency in the coming years.
