The three week trial of 28-year-old Chad Colton Alphonse, charged with second degree murder in the March 11th, 2016 stabbing death of Waylon Jackson, is nearing its end, with the crown and defence presenting their closing arguments to the jury in court on Wednesday.
The crown argued that Alphonse had stabbed Jackson out of anger and retaliation after losing a fight between the two, as opposed to doing so in self-defence.
Additionally, the crown said that Alphonse was not in any more immediate danger after the fight, and had the option to simply leave the party and go home.
Later on, the defence stated that Alphonse was very intoxicated the night of the stabbing, and was not thinking straight.
As far as the stabbing goes, the defence said that Alphonse panicked when hearing someone yell: "Stop Waylon, you're going to kill him!" while Jackson was beating Alphonse with a chair during the fight. That being said the defence insisted that Alphonse reacted instinctively, instead of impulsively, and that the stabbing was indeed lethal, but not excessive.
With all 27 witnesses having testified over the last two weeks and closing arguments being delivered to the jury, deliberations are set to begin in the coming days.
