Grapes for ice wine are already being picked, thanks to the early winter.
Eric von Krosigk, wine maker at Summerhill Pyramid Winery, says they started picking the frozen grapes on Sunday night- the earliest in over 20 years.
“We were actually hard-pressed to get the fresh grapes off before this freeze hit so we were very, very busy for the last few weeks trying to get everything picked and then the freezer hit.”
He says temperatures to pick the grapes for ice wine have to be at least -7 degrees.
Now that more seasonable weather is in the forecast, von Krosigk says they probably won't be harvesting again for another 2 weeks.
