A Kelowna shelter slated for closure will remain open for the forseeable future.
The Cornerstone Shelter on Leon Ave was due to shut down at the end of June.
Now the provincial government is allocating $2.4 million to keep it open until the people inside can be housed elsewhere.
Following the announcement, the City of Kelowna, Interior Health, and the Central Okanagan Journey Home Society all expressed full support for the decision.
Journey Home's Executive Director Gaelene Askeland admits it's not an ideal situation but believes the alternative would be far worse.
"Shelters are often pretty close or at capacity and we still have people outside" said Askeland. "So putting another 70, 80 people outside overnight without a proper transition into alternative inside housing, I think that would be a difficult thing for the community to manage."
BC Housing is in the process of developing two housing projects on Agassiz Road and McIntosh Road. Once complete, the projects will introduce 101 new units of supportive housing into the community.
