The corner of Lakeshore and Collett Road has been a busy place lately.
After a brand new roundabout was built last year, developers were in front of council Monday to pitch a new development for the southwest corner.
The four storey building would incorporate nine condos on top of 10,000 square feet of commercial space.
Councillor Luke Stack says with agricultural land immediately to the south of that corner, it wouldn't have fit.
"If you took this proposal and moved it to Pandosy, and it was in the town centre, I would absolutely support it - I think it would be perfect. But to stick it way out in the Mission, 4.5 km from Pandosy, goes against everything that I've worked on this council to achieve, so it makes no sense to me at all," he said.
"As a matter of fact, if I had my druthers I'd like to see this property down-zoned to something that's more modest, like residential housing or something that would be in keeping with the neighbourhood. But I know that that's not realistic."
Colleague Gail Given disagreed.
"I think the viability of this being a residential corner is unrealistic. There is no way that this would be a purely residential corner, it's just too active. You just have to drive around that circle once, and you know that your ground floor is going to be something other than that," she said.
Mayor Colin Basran says he also wanted the project to move forward to a public hearing.
"Because at the end of the day, this is near other commercial outlets, near linear trails, near parks. So to have a commercial building with nine residential units, which is not massive density in my mind, I think was certainly worth exploring with the community," he said.
The site in question used to be home to the Minstrel Cafe, which closed down in 2016.
Stack was joined in opposition by Mohini Singh, Brad Sieben, Maxine DeHart, and Charlie Hodge, while Given and Basran voted in favour with Ryan Donn and Tracy Gray.
