Kelowna city council says it's not surprised by the results of this year's citizens survey.
Conducted by Ipsos Public Affairs, the final report is based on survey answers from 300 people, who are randomly telephoned.
For the first time this year, people identified social issues as the top challenge facing the community, in a spot that's usually reserved for transportation issues.
Mayor Colin Basran says though it's not unexpected, he's confident in council's track record.
"When it comes to the social issues and the mobility issues, there are no quick, easy, or inexpensive fixes for either of those challenges, but I obviously applaud council for trying to do what we can to chip away at both of those, and I think that we will get to a good place," he said.
"Given the pressures that we as a council are feeling, in terms of where investment should be taking place, not really any real surprises, per se. I think we would agree with everything we're hearing in this survey, it was well previous to this survey coming out that we sort of adjusted our council priorities. Because we knew that social issues were very prevalent, and they were becoming a major concern for ourĀ residents."
When asked about quality of life, 33% said that it had worsened over the last three years, compared to the 22% who said it improved in that time.
Basran says as leaders, they can't be defeated by the critics.
"I think given today's social media world, it's really easy to focus on the negative things. But let's not lose sight of the fact that there was a lot of good news coming out of this survey," he said.
"I think that's important to recognize, because there will be people who will choose to focus solely on the negative, and we know there's a lot of greatĀ things happening here."
On the plus side, 90% of people said they feel safe, and are satisfied with the city's services.
86% also believe they get good value on their taxes.
