City staff were constantly busy issuing development permits over the course of last year.
The final numbers from 2016 were presented on Monday, with the final tally for residential units coming in at just under 2000.
Planner Specialist Graham March says there was one area that stood out.
"For the second consecutive year, our Highway 97 sector saw the most new units. And these are primarily located in that University South Village centre, just adjacent to the university, " he said.
"We had about 460 new units split across four projects along Academy Way."
March says commercial projects also had a strong year, and that the three biggest were all transportation related.
"Two of these large projects were car dealerships. One's a new Kelowna Nissan Infinity, and the other is the new Porsche dealership," he said.
"The other large commercial project is the commercial complex in the airport business park, adjacent to the entranceway. It has a Nestor's Market as well as a Tim Horton's going in there."
Commercial amounted to 343,000 square feet, which is on par with the most recent five and ten year averages.
March says the good news is, this trend doesn't appear to be slowing down.
"We've seen strong residential numbers overall, and we're trending towards our goals for both new units, as well as our housing split. We've seen positive commercial growth, with significant development along Highway 97. And industrial and instiutional continue to see new development, but at a slower pace than our 10-year averages," he said.
He says a main reason for last year's lower industrial numbers was that it didn't get applications from institutions like the hospital, for the first time in a few years.
In the first quarter of this year, permits have been given for 858 residential units, a 216% increase compared to last year.
