Kelowna RCMP called the Lower Mainland RCMP Explosives Disposal Unit after an explosive item was found in a car at the ICBC claims centre on Springfield Road.
On Tuesday, January 31 at 1:53 pm, an employee at the claims centre called police after an estimator located what looked like an explosive item in the contents of a passenger vehicle, towed to the facility and associated to a stolen vehicle claim initiated out of the Lower Mainland.
The vehicle had been previously recovered by RCMP in the Central Okanagan.
The bomb squad determined there was no imminent risk to the public, unless they were in close proximity to the explosive material, which was considered more stable than your typical explosive, and would have required further components to discharge.
EDU Police Explosives Technicians isolated and secured the explosive item and conducted a search of the rest of the vehicle with negative results.
Corporal Jesse O’Donaghey says ICBC staff did the right thing and contacted police immediately.
He says the RCMP cannot stress enough to the public the importance of leaving suspicious or suspected explosive items where they are found and not transporting them to any police detachment.
