The Okanagan Valley could experience another hit of strong weather before calm conditions return next week.
Residents and commuters should be prepared for strong winds, as a developing storm is forecast to cross the central interior overnight and Friday.
Environment Canada issued a statement expecting gusts of up to 80 kilometres an hour in parts of the Okanagan Valley.
“You're going to start with strong southerly winds gusting to 50km/h and then overnight you'll see that switch over to first westerly and then north-westerly. From there you have the potential of seeing gusts to possibly 70km/h, in fact 80km/h are possible as well,” said Meteorologist, Armel Castellan.
Castellan recommends that residents anchor down belongings or bring items inside that could be blown away.
“Winds can be very problematic with respect to people getting injured both on the road system but also just with flying debris and any kind of vulnerable tree, hazard trees, could be prone to falling over.
“There’s also talk about power outages being possible with this kind of a wind event,” said Castellan.
An extra heads up to commuters and drivers along the Okanagan Connector and surrounding highways.
Environment Canada said there is potential for snow accompanying extreme winds at higher elevations.
“The wind warnings could in fact materialize for your area and so people should be very cognisant about the dangers of very strong winds but also changing directions relatively quickly,” said Castellan.
