West Kelowna Mayor Doug Findlater announced Friday morning that he will not be seeking re-election in the October 2018 municipal election.
"I am happy to say that after two long and successful careers (10 as Mayor and 34 with the Government of Canada), it is time to devote more time to family and personal matters, as well as travel to interesting places," Findlater said in a prepared statement. "I came into this position of Mayor as the second Mayor in West Kelowna and after a turbulent first year for the city where I realized we needed a steady hand and stability at the helm. I leave the legacy of being the longest serving Mayor in West Kelowna and a solid establishment of West Kelowna as a full service functioning city."
Findlater has served in politics in the West Kelowna area for the last 16 years. Some of the positions he has held include Chair of the Westside Governance Restructure Committee, City Councilor, and Regional District Manager for West Kelowna.
Before the election, which takes place on Saturday, October 20th, Findlater says he'll be looking at ways to stay involved and continue supporting the City.
