With cooler temperatures and precipitation this week, some people may think it's safe to have a campfire again, but the BC Wildfire Service says a campfire ban remains in effect throughout the Kamloops Fire Centre.
"Until we have a little bit more long-term precipitation and some cooler temperatures, and we start to see a little bit more moisture being retained in the soil, the campfire ban will remain in place," says Fire Information Officer Nicole Bonnett.
Any violaters risk a fine of more than $1,000. Since mid-July, over 70 tickets have been handed out across the province.
So far, the only campfire ban that's been rescinded in the province was the one in the Fort Nelson and Peace Forest Districts.
At this time, 90 wildfires are burning throughout the Kamloops Fire Centre. Since April 1st, approximately 440 have started in the region, with most of them starting due to lightning strikes. As of Wednesday morning, the fire rating in the Kamloops Fire Centre is listed as 'moderate.'
