Do you have a broken household item you’re not sure how to fix? Don’t just toss it, learn to fix it instead at the upcoming Repair Café at Okanagan College. Small appliances, lamps, knickknacks, clothing, clocks, bikes, and much more, a group of talented volunteers will work with you to fix your item, for free.
Hosted by the Regional District’s Waste Reduction Office, the Repair Cafe runs Saturday, October 26th 10:00 am until 2:00 pm, at the Okanagan College TRADES Building, 1000 KLO Road.
“These Repair Cafés revive the value of repair and repurposing, the opposite of the throw-away mindset we often see,” says Waste Reduction Facilitator Rae Stewart. “Our 30 plus volunteer fixers will attempt to breathe new life into just about anything. If you can carry it in under your arm, they’ll do their best to tackle the problem, with your help!”
Stewart adds they’ve been hosting two Repair Cafes annually for a few years now, and attendance builds with each event. ”Those that attend our Repair Cafes tell us they’re happy to have this service available to them. We find they’re often surprised to learn that fixing their broken item is not only possible, sometimes it’s even easy. If you attend, you’ll learn you’re encouraged to actively participate in the dis-assembly, troubleshooting and troubleshooting and repair of your item. That way you leave empowered, part of the process. “
Do note it’s a one item only fixing limit, and there can be wait times, especially for smaller household electrical appliances, the most common item to come through the door. So, you’re advised to be prepared, bring a book, or visit the Okanagan Regional Library booth while you wait.
