Rain and snowmelt continues to add to swollen Okanagan Lake, and in response, residents in some low-lying areas in Kelowna will see crews flood-proofing today.
Bruce Smith, at the Regional District of Central Okanagan, says the big message to everyone, who's been at risk of flooding this spring, is to keep flood protections in place.
"We're not done with this yet. I was checking back in some of our news releases from the past, and I remember a flooding event in 2011, and another one in 2006, and they were dated June 25th, so we could be well into June or early July before we're done with this," he says.
Some of the areas where crews will be installing flood protection on the foreshore and on beaches include neighbourhoods between the bridge and Kelowna Hospital, and in West Kelowna at Pritchard Park and Pebble Park.
Smith says so far, over 400-thousand sandbags have been used this spring to battle floodwaters.
