The provincial government has announced $10-million in funding for Food Banks BC.
The government says the money is to ensure BC's 100 food banks have the proper refrigeration capacity to receive fresh products.
Food Banks BC will invest $6.5 million in transporting food from farms, grocery stores and restaurants, and $3.5 million for fridges and freezers.
Lenetta Perry, at the Central Okanagan Food Bank in Kelowna, has told AM 1150 News they have fridges and freezers and are able to store perishable food, but many of the smaller food banks cannot.
Laura Lansink, at Food Banks BC, says the new funding means families will now have access to a wide variety of fresh, nutritious food.
It's estimated every year across Canada - $31 billion worth of quality, fresh, usable food is needlessly wasted.
There are 10 food banks throughout the Okanagan.
