The former head of the Kelowna RCMP is coming back to work for the city on public safety.
Bill McKinnon has been contracted to work with senior levels of government, community groups and social service agencies to tackle the issues contributing to criminal activity.
Mayor Colin Basran says the city doing its part when it comes to law enforcement - but just adding more police officers is clearly not enough.
He says while crime rates have dropped slightly in the past 5 years - criminal activity has spiked in concentrated areas - and more can be done to minimize crime from occurring in the first place.
McKinnon says what's needed is a coordinated approach by all levels of government to identify the services needed upstream, before there's a need for law enforcement - in other words to close any possible gaps in services people need to enhance safety.
McKinnon is to deliver recommendations in November.
