FortisBC customers in the Okanagan could get hit with an average 9% increase in natural gas rates beginning January 1st, 2019.
The Enbridge pipeline explosion and fire near Prince George in October is being blamed for a shortage in natural gas, and Fortis says the rate hike reflects what it's paying other companies to store and transport gas through their pipelines.
The increase is equal to about $68.00 more a year, and still needs approval from the BC Utilities Commission.
Customers are still being encouraged to conserve natural gas this winter.
The Enbridge pipeline is currently running at 85% capacity.
