An outbreak of gastrointestinal illness at Kelowna General has closed off a unit of the hospital.
2-West is currently closed to new admissions, and patients with common symptoms and patients and staff who may have been exposed are being cared for in a seperate area from others who have not been exposed.
Andrew Hughes, Health Service Administrator, says outbreaks of influenza and gastrointestinal illness are not uncommon for this time of year, including hospitals.
He says all patients are receiving appropriate care and enchanced cleaning and housekeeping practices have been adopted to prevent the further spread of illness.
The hospital has been at overcapacity in recent weeks, due in part to the flu and gastrointestinal illness spreading.
Several residential care facilities have also recently overcome an outbreak.
