The Kelowna Gospel Mission is expecting to serve 1,000 people during its biggest dinner of the year.
The 40th annual Thanksgiving Dinner takes place on Monday from noon to 6 PM on Leon Avenue.
Mandy Phillips, Kitchen Manager at the Mission, says they've prepared 60 turkeys, 20 hams, and 500 pounds of potatoes for the event.
"We start prepping a month in advance," says Phillips. "The big part of it is cooking the turkeys, and we make our own stuffing. Obviously we couldn't do it without all of the volunteers."
Among those 50 volunteers will be Mayor Colin Basran, MP Stephen Fuhr, and MLA Ben Stewart.
"We feel blessed to be able to pay it forward by helping people who have experienced hardship in their lives," says Phillips. "When basic needs of life like food and shelter are met, people are free to focus on the next steps of their life.”
It's one of the Missions three big dinners of the year, the other two happening during Christmas and Easter.
